Not the stuff of sci-fi satire. This is a real finding from a real study: Female-named hurricanes kill more than male hurricanes because people don’t respect them.

”’[Our] model suggests that changing a severe hurricane’s name from Charley … to Eloise … could nearly triple its death toll,’ the study says.”
Oh my fucking god

Feminism.

Do you have a point?

I guess my angry, bitter, disgusted sarcastic comment wasn’t clear. This phenomenon is so gross and surprising (to me) that I was unable to be eloquent. I cannot believe it’s even a thing. Hurricanes are dangerous (duh), and the fact that people view ones with women’s names as less of a threat is mind blowing, especially considering that the most severe storms we’ve had have been given female names. The fact that women are so viewed as weak or something to be ignored, even in regards to A POTENTIALLY DEADLY NATURAL DISASTER is a feminist issue. But the fact that it HAS to be is absurd. The fact that misogyny is so deeply entrenched in the human psyche that people will ignore direct threats to their safety is so unbelievable that it’s just a sad joke.So that’s my point.

I didn’t follow this headline at first - thought it was bad satire. Then I read the article…Naming a hurricane with a female name makes people - ALL people - treat it with less respect?! What. The. Fuck. Is. Wrong. With. Us.
