farting is such sweet sorrow

Dear Roger Waters,
I have loved you for most of my life. The perfect balance of your pre-emo brooding and David Gilmour’s bluesy soundscapes is what made Pink Floyd one of the best bands of the 20th century—if not the best band. I mean, shit, man, Dark Side of the Moon is the second best-selling album of all time. It’s not my favorite Floyd album, but that’s damn cool, man.
I’m talking deep, deep fan. “Adam’s Psychedelic Breakfast” and “Absolutely Curtains” are some of my regular go-tos. So take this as the heartfelt truth of a lifelong Floyd fan: Your new tour of The Wall is bullshit!
You’re charging people—at the minimum—$204 to see The Wall live? And you’re dressing your website like a back-alley Banksy-designed revolutionary coven, in an attempt to play to this moment of anti-government sentiment? BULLSHIT! This moment isn’t anti-government. It’s anti-bullshit. An honest, fair-dealing government is fine. One that cozies up to corporations at the expense of people’s well being is not. You’re playing on ideas that you don’t seem to get. Maybe it’s because you’re old. Maybe it’s because you never had a true revolutionary moment yourself. I get it. You missed Vietnam and the 21st century wars came after your prime. That’s fine. You don’t have to have had that moment. You only have to be honest. (I mean, really, what does a picture of George W. Bush holding a gun to his head beneath “sorry” and above “Should I trust the government” even mean? It means nothing. It assume it means you let some corporation craft an idea of this moment for you. Bullshit.)
And the final, most egregious insult, far more offensive than that ridiculous ticket price, is this “Fallen Loved Ones” thing you’re doing. People can submit photos of their loved ones who have died in combat to be displayed at concerts during The Wall? So people will feel that they’re in some way involved in this because you’re implying a connection between The Wall and the deaths they’ve endured as a result of war? Making people feel like what you’re selling (an overpriced concert) impacts them personally is just greed parading as concern. You are selling people a dishonest emotional experience. AND YOU WROTE A FUCKING ALBUM ABOUT IT! THE VERY ALBUM YOU’RE NOW TOURING!
OK, that’s it. As always, I could be wrong. I could be letting my own disappointment and distrust cloud my perception of what’s happening here. But I don’t think so. I think this really is bullshit. And I think you’re bullshit for doing it.
Sincerely,
Seth Wharton
