It’s subtle, but this is why I’m not an Andy Warhol fan.
I believe those who create art should care deeply. We should be obsessed.
It doesn’t matter if anyone else likes it - that part I agree with. And it IS important to avoid procrastination. Artists are notorious procrastinators. But, as is reflected by the current saturation of absolute mediocrity in all areas of art, it is imperitive that we strive for brilliance in everything we do. To churn out piece after piece without thought or consideration of it’s quality is to produce a cannon of blah. And like begets like. Hence where we are today. And I think Andy Warhol - while shaking up the stuffy art-historians of his day by injecting a little “who gives a fuck?!” into the culture of art - has taught subsequent generations to be lazy. That fame, glamor and power are more important than content.
If more artists (painters, sculptors, actors, dancers, filmmakers, comedians, musicians, etc) gave more of a crap about what they did, the level of work we would behold would blow our socks off. And I, for one, will follow that doctrine over anything AW has to offer until the day I die.
They needed Andy Warhol back then. But we need excellence in our artists today. Bring them on. We need to be amazed.
(Doug posted this pic a while ago and I waited to post this so that there would be no association with him and what I was saying. I LOVE me some Doug! He’s awesome)
