///Robot Riley///: Talk to me about external Hard Drives

The best drives for video I’ve come across are G-tech: http://bit.ly/27ZydU

I hope I don’t jinx myself but I’ve yet to have a G-tech drive crash or fail. Almost all of my LaCie’s (name the model) have.

The orange “Rugged” drives from LaCie should only really be used like a large flash drive. They’re great for storing things on if you’re moving around between edits or carting around large FCP files/footage, etc - primarily because most drives still have spinning discs in them and are prone to break if knocked. “Rugged” is a little more durable in that regard. that is also why it’s a good idea to turn your lap top off when you take it on the road with you.

All drives WILL FAIL!

That’s why a good editor always (ALWAYS) follows the rule of 3: Back up your work on 3 drives (and keep updating your backups).

Hope that helps.

I had people help me shoot two different videos last week. It’s very exciting to actually produce something for once.

So, if I’m going to edit (or even get ahold of) the footage, I need an external hard drive. It’s dumb that I don’t have one yet, but here I am.

The ones I see people using most…

  1. adamconover said: Also: Burning DVDs isn’t that much better than saving on drives. DVDs only last a few years even if you never use them. Not great long-term storage.
  2. dynamoe answered: get it ‘cause it’s orange and it will go with all your orange stuff
  3. melissagomez answered: Whatever you get, you need to have a back up to your backup…and then burn DVDs. Your drive will last at least a year or two, so no worries
  4. adamconover answered: There’s no such thing as a fail-safe HD - all drives fail eventually. Backups are the only answer. Buy a cheap drive and back it up often.
  5. caseydonahue answered: I only use g-tech drives. I have 4 of them. Only use those.

  8. heykurt answered: If you can’t lose it, you should never keep it on just 1 harddrive. Look at dropbox. That’s where I posted your school night vids.
  9. thematthewbriancohen said: Here is my real answer. Hard drives fail a lot. It sucks. But I like Seagate drives. Lacie’s have been good to me, too. Hitachi’s have failed on me. Check New Egg for reviews before you buy. Don’t buy anything cheap or from Best Buy.
  10. khealywu said: They’re pretty reliable now. You can get a decent one for $100 from Staples. Solid state are the most reliable overall but WAY more expensive staples.com/Seagate…
  11. kskill said: Those orange lacie’s are more for portability than actually working off of. They’re good shuttle drives, bad work drives.

  13. kskill answered: buy a g-tech. if you’re feeling reaaaal fancy, buy a g-raid. boom.
