Best Improv Scene
Reblog and describe the best improv scene you ever saw.
Hot Sauce. Some time in 2010…?
A psychiatry scene where Gil played a doctor and Ben played the patient. Started pretty simply: “I’m feeling good these days,” “I’ll be the judge of that,” etc. Adam was leaning arms crossed on the back wall. Then, Ben shifted slightly in his chair to glance back at Adam (I’m imagining to see where he was, if he was doing anything he needed to be aware of, who knows) and Gil pounced on the opportunity by labeling it, saying “don’t look at that button. It’s nothing. So, as you were saying-” Ben picked it up immediately and the scene continued with them trying to get through the therapy session without Ben looking at, touching, or talking about the now “silver” button. It went on like this for a while and just when you thought Ben had forgotten about it he lurched forward and slammed the button… at which moment Adam sprang to life as a massive gorilla and screwed the bejesus out of him. Simplest of scenes, simplest of games, perfectly performed and the simian-reward was above and beyond anything I ever expected. I’m sure the robotic/cerebral improvisers in the community would’ve despised it but Hot Sauce and other teams like Roo Roo and Decoster showed me the kind of improv I wanted to do. Silly, smart, broad AND hyper-realism all-in-one.
I hate LA for taking most of them away from the UCBNY stage!
